Finding a Balance Between Business and Leisure

We’ve all experienced periods of burnout, even when doing something we love. Some days can feel like an endless cycle of one more client, one more infill and another piece of admin. Over time, this can become tiring and stressful.

It’s easy to become wrapped up in your work, particularly when you’re running your own business. You might try to fit every task into one day, accommodate every client request and complete every job on your list. However, this can leave little time to rest and recharge.

Sleep, regular meals and proper hydration are essential for maintaining your energy and concentration. If work is always on your mind, these basic needs can quickly be overlooked. Here are some practical ways to protect your time and reduce the risk of burnout.

      Avoid Overbooking

You may find yourself booking regular clients, scheduling lash infills and accommodating new customers attending their first eyelash extension appointment. Without clear limits, your diary can quickly become overloaded.

When a regular client requests a last-minute appointment, remember that it is acceptable to say no if you do not have enough time. This can be difficult, particularly with loyal clients, but most will understand and appreciate your honesty. Clients who value your work are often willing to wait for your next available appointment.

If you regularly receive enquiries from new clients, consider creating a dedicated waiting list. Record their contact details and offer appointments in order when suitable spaces become available. This allows you to manage demand without placing unnecessary pressure on your existing schedule.

      Schedule Your Working Day

A digital calendar can help you organise appointments while protecting time for yourself. Google Calendar is free and easy to use, although any scheduling system that suits your business can work. Block out the time required for each appointment and remember to include lunch breaks, cleaning, stock management and administrative work.

You can also colour-code appointments by treatment type, making it easier to understand your workload and the time required for each client.

Even a short break between appointments gives you an opportunity to sit upright, stretch, rest your eyes and mentally prepare for your next client. Avoid filling every available space in your calendar simply because it appears empty.

Try not to substitute coffee or energy drinks for proper meals. A balanced lunch and regular snacks can help you maintain your energy throughout the working day. Keep a reusable water bottle nearby as a visible reminder to stay hydrated between appointments.

      Make Time for Yourself

Set aside some time that is entirely your own. This could be a relaxing evening at home, a weekend away, a face mask and hot bath, or a professional treatment at a salon.

Simple activities can also help you switch off from work. Read a book, watch a film with a friend or partner, go for a short walk or spend time outdoors. What matters is creating a genuine break from appointments, messages and business administration.

Walking through woodland as a way to relax away from work

These steps can help you organise your working days while protecting your personal time. Creating space to rest and enjoy life outside your business can help you return to your work feeling more focused, motivated and energised.
